It’s a name you’ve probably heard around a million times in the last 24 hours. A pioneer of pop music as well as one of my personal favourite pop culture figures; George Michael was one of the voices of a generation. The shocking news of his death on Christmas day shook not only his fans, but many who had never listened to him before.
Of course George was not only known for his solo career, but a wonderful career in which he was half of 80s pop band Wham!. He and school colleague Andrew Ridgley became 80s icons as well as heartthrobs to teenage girls everywhere. But George Michael was so much more than that. His talent shone through and although faced with adversity, his generosity and kind heart will be part of his legacy forever.
Through his words and music we will remember George for many many years to come. A prolific member of the LGBT community, he helped thousands through tough times during a time when acceptance wasn’t quite as sure as it is now.
Thank you, George. Rest in peace.
